BACKGROUND

Child abuse and neglect are of global concern and have been an issue long outstanding. The willful maltreatment of children has been recognized internationally as a matter of great sociological impact with legal significance and medical concern. Child abuse can also be defined as intended or unintended harm to a child by another person who may be parents, relatives or guardians.

Forensic aspects on the abuse of children are one part of a very broad topic concerning children. It is of a significant interest, particularly in relation to investigation of criminal cases and hearing of such cases in court to determine the cause of death. This field is very useful in the fight against crime and dismantling the mystery and complexity in the investigation of cases especially cases involving injuries and deaths of children to ascertain and establish the cause of injuries and cause of death of abused and neglected children.

In the examination of a child, who allegedly died from intentional violence, the nature of the injuries and the cause of death are usually quite evident. The difficulty generally lies in deciding the manner in which the injuries may have been sustained, their relative ages and in excluding any disease which might have made the child susceptible to minor degrees of trauma which would have been innocuous to a normal child.
